A GROUP of Maitland folk armed with brushes and easels have taken to painting some of the most picturesque scenery in the Hunter.

Led by Maitland signwriter of 60 years and still-life artist Jim Casey, a group put paint to palette yesterday, working under the Long Bridge on Veterans Flat.

They were positioned to take advantage of a view of St Marys Anglican Church through the piers of the bridge (at the Maitland Hospital end) looking across farmland flats and into Central Maitland.

"I discovered the scene underneath the Long Bridge with the fields in front of the church. It's a beautiful view," Mr Casey said.

Mr Casey takes groups to sites across Maitland to paint scenes and practise the "plein air" method, painting done outside rather than in a studio.
